After reading to chapter 5, The book show of discrimination toward the black. This is because it was the 1940s, right after the the U.S. civil war. The book start off in court where a black man name Jefferson was convicted for murder on a white man. Grant Wiggins is struggling with a decision to whether stay or escape to another state, but his aunt and Jefferson;s godmonter persuade him to visit Jefferson in his cell.

Another example was when Mr.Morgan said that the white were getting the same materials as the black but Grant knew that the books were use book from the whites.
Symbols: Whites calling blacks hogs repeatably because they think black are wild animal. Another symbol is how black people walk through the back door of building because white say it show disrespect to them if black walks through the front door.
